Following the liquid vibes of the delightful Soul Waves LP on Liquid Drops, MSDOS returns to the label with fresh UK talent Payback for an album of collaborative soulful vibes. "Soul Searching" opens with a combination of nostalgic piano tones and distant diva vocals, while "Only You" has subtle hints of jazz saxophone buried within its deep subs. Tracks like "Sweet Enigma" and "All My Peeps" meanwhile are given a more abstract edge with their cavernous staccato dub chords, all held down with insistent rolling drums and viscous bass, though our pick is the brilliant "Inspired", with its distorted vocal monologue, sweeping pads and phased jackhammer rhythms. On the basis of this collaboration, Payback should well be a talent to watch very closely indeed.
