Review: A name long associated with the Hyperboloid platform thanks to releases like Back On Track (2016), Next Mutation (2013) and Bulletproof (2012), Koloah is granted his debut album in 2021 with Millennium Sun. With swathes of uplifting, ambient synth inspiring the ears in tracks like "Hope" the LP dives through more cutting drum and bass in "Urban Ninja" next to staccato synth experimentalisms in "Angles City" - some may think Roly Porter. There's also floating technicolour cut ups of twinkling trance and syncopated beats in "Android Love" alongside music fit for and anime soundtrack in "New Earth Born". An album that dives into experimental drum and bass as much as it does '90s IDM and beatless race to new future club music and dub.

The future is now... Sort of. We may not come close to the beauty of the canonical settings of cyberpunk novels and movies, but we can get a familiar dystopian feeling from reading the news. "It's an album about the changing times, about the new era where science and technology coexist with wars and dictatorship, where world hunger exists alongside space travel," Koloah says of Millennium Sun, his first album on Hyperboloid in five years. Inspired by sci-fi classics Blade Runner, Akira, Strange Days and Nirvana, here he skillfully mixes sounds reminiscent of movie soundtracks with jungle, bass, electro and trance to create the atmosphere of a nightclub in the city of the future that has come.
The beat here often gives way to the melancholic, almost ambient tracks that give this album a cinematic feel. If Millennium Sun were a movie, it would certainly be optimistic. You can even tell by the names of the tracks: New Earth Born, Android Love, Welcome to the New Era and, most importantly, Hope. We can still live in hope, Koloah reminds us, and dream of a better future; even if we still don't know what the androids are dreaming of.

"Это альбом о смене эпох, о новом времени, в котором технологии и наука соседствуют с войнами и диктатурой, где голод существует параллельно с полетами в космос", говорит Koloah о "Millennium Sun", первом своем альбоме на Hyperboloid за пять лет. Вдохновившись классикой научной фантастики — "Бегущим по лезвию", "Акирой", "Странными днями" и "Нирваной" — он умело смешивает звуки, напоминающие о саундтреках, с джанглом, бейсом, электро и трансом, создавая атмосферу ночного клуба в мире наступившего будущего.

Но часто бит здесь уступает место меланхоличным, близким к эмбиенту трекам, которые дают альбому кинематографическое чувство. Если бы "Millennium Sun" был фильмом, то определенно оптимистичным. Это можно сказать уже по названиям композиций: "New Earth Born", "Android Love", "Welcome to the New Era" и, самое важное, "Hope".
